Disaster Risk and Poverty in Latin America

Objective

The risks of extreme natural events, as a growing phenomenon, have a direct impact on the welfare of the regions and specific households. The incidence and persistence of such events is strongly linked, mainly, to the increasing vulnerability of the households and communities in developing countries. Thus, the impact of these extreme events may result in an immediate increase of poverty and deprivation, with important long-term consequences, as demonstrated by the impact of recent natural events in different parts of the world.

This situation has reiterated the need to place natural hazards as a priority on the global agenda to fight poverty. At the same time, evidence that climate change is increasing the recurrence of natural disasters in various parts of the world, such as droughts and floods, has reinforced the sense of urgency to tackle this aspect.

Therefore, one of the main objectives of the project is to observe the relationship between extreme natural events and various social indicators and as a result determine the impact of such risks on poverty, income, consumption, health and education of the population.

The countries involved in the project are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru. Each one of them will prepare a research paper that addresses the incidence of extreme weather events and their impact on welfare.
